County Natural Heritage Inventory Program

Forest County

Background

Forest County sits in an area of the state known as the High Plateau section of the Appalachian Plateau Province. The streams and rivers that dissect this landscape have cut down through a once level plateau to form deep valleys, leaving the flat-topped ridges as remnants of the plateau. The Allegheny River is the largest river in the county and between it and its major tributary to the south - the Clarion River - drain the entire county. This image is of the Allegheny River south of Tionesta.

Calendar

o The county signed an agreement with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to conduct a natural heritage inventory in August 2004.
o An advisory committee is now being organized.
