Steps Along the Way
WPC's Milestones in 2004
50 Miles of Streambank Fencing
Restricting livestock access to area streams has proven to have multiple environmental benefits, including: reducing the amount of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus entering the waterways; protecting streambanks; reducing sediment loading; and creating valuable corridors for wildlife.
WPC’s Riparian Buffer Initiative installed its 50th mile of streambank fencing in 2004. Working with partners like California University’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Ducks Unlimited and others, our Watershed Assistance Center is improving water quality using fencing and other agricultural best management practices on regional farms and dairy operations.
