Milestones in WPC Stewardship of French Creek Watershed

1950s Western Pennsylvania Conservancy begins focus on protecting the glacial region of northwestern Pennsylvania for future generations.

1960s Land protection efforts include acquisition of rare wetland communities including the Wattsburg Fen Natural Area, which has been designated a National Natural Landmark.

1980s WPC designates French Creek a special project area when data documented that this system held the highest degree of biodiversity found anywhere in the northeastern United States.

1995 French Creek Project initiated with partnership between WPC, the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and Allegheny College.

2000 WPC establishes its Northwest Field Station to expand scientific research in the French Creek watershed and the glacial lakes of northwestern Pennsylvania.

2002 WPC completes the French Creek Watershed Assessment and Conservation Plan, a blueprint for environmental education, conservation and restoration of French Creek.

2004 WPC publishes First State of Stream Report for French Creek Watershed.

2005 WPC publishes Second State of the Stream Report.

2007 A family donation funds the purchase of 163 acres in the French Creek watershed.
