In this issue...Celebrating the Renewal of Nature
by WPC Executive Vice President Cynthia Carrow
Each spring I am amazed at the resiliency of nature and its determination to renew itself no matter what conditions the winter has inflicted upon it. I was eager to see the first blush of red maple on the hillsides, and catch the scent of skunk cabbage on some paths along a stream. Spring in western Pennsylvania is when the greening woodlands renew our own spirits as they enliven the landscape. More...

A New Season at Fallingwater
and a great opportunity to take an In-Depth Tour
Beginning this month, visitors can have the one of a kind experience of seeing Fallingwater’s cantilevers soar above them, almost defying gravity with a grace unequaled in the history of architecture, and of hearing the roar of Bear Run Creek cascading directly below them. Tours range from the regular one-hour guided exploration of the house, to the in-depth two-hour tour. More...

The Poetry of Nature
A new guide to Bear Run Nature Reserve revives an almost-forgotten trail experience
Long-time WPC members may recall the birth of Poetry Trail around 1970. At that time, Dr. John Hug conducted nature education programs at the Bear Run Center using a mimeographed guidebook. This spring we are celebrating the continued popularity of this hiking trail with the publication of a new guidebook.   More...

Flagship Needed for Important River Study
Forget that old saying about being up   the creek without a paddle. An important WPC scientific study is literally up the river without a boat. More...

Mountain Watershed Association Members Protect and Enhance Their Home
The Watershed Assistance Center has worked with more than 200 local grassroots watershed groups in the past four years. Our work with the Mountain Watershed Association was a natural partnership of two groups with strong commitments to restore the natural beauty of western Pennsylvania.   More...

Dear Dr. Conservation
Some conservation issues are not so clear-cut. For example, I do believe what the scientists say about acid rain, but I cannot see it and therefore it is mysterious. On the other hand, I have seen places where trees have been cut down and the forest and habitats are clearly changed. Isn't this an environmental problem, too? More...

Flagship Still Needed for Important River Study
As noted above, an important WPC scientific study is literally up the river without a boat.
