Hearts Content One of the few surviving old- growth forests in Pennsylvania is the beautiful Heart's Content Recreation Area, which is part of the Allegheny National Forest. It is located 15 miles southwest of Warren, Pa. Although only 120 acres, there are 300 to 400-year-old white pine, hemlock and beech trees, some towering 150 feet or more. The uncommon native shrub, hobblebush, can also be found. This species has been decimated by the whitetail deer. There is a one-mile interpretive trail through the timber stand. Many species of songbirds can be found here, and if one is lucky, the long bubbly song of the tiny winter wren can be heard, which many birders feel is one of the loveliest of all birdsongs.
