The bog turtle is among the smallest of North American turtles. Adults are 4 to 4-1/2 inches long. Home to these turtles are relatively open portions of sphagnum bogs, swamps or marshy meadows with slow moving spring fed streams. Draining
and destruction of their habitats has led the bog turtle to be classified
as a state endangered species and a federally threatened species. Due
to its rarity, it is highly prized by turtle fanciers in this country,
and even more so overseas; therefore, many have been removed for commercial
purposes. This black market trade is a threat to local populations.
