Naturally Creepy Places Week - An Abandoned Train Tunnel
Today's photo is of the National Tunnel in Cecil Township, Washington County and was taken by WPC's County Natural Heritage Coordinator Jeff Wagner.
This tunnel, once thundering with trains running the Montour Rail Line, is now a feature between mile 27 and mile 28 of the Montour Trail, a premier rails-to-trails project running from Clariton to Coraopolis, and championed by the Montour Trail Council.
From the Montour Trail website: "The Montour Trail is a multi-use non-motorized recreational rail-trail near Pittsburgh, Pa that will ultimately extend 47 miles from Coraopolis to Clairton. Currently, multiple sections of the trail totaling about 30 miles are completed. New sections are being added each year. The trail is paved with a smooth surface of crushed limestone, which makes it ideal for all forms of non-motorized use: bicycling, walking, running, cross-country skiing, and nature appreciation. In certain sections, horseback riding is also permitted, but not on the improved trail surface."
In keeping with the upcoming month-ending holiday, during the week of October 18th through the 22nd, WPC Daily will feature five creepy locales and offer some scientific facts that may shed some light on these places. At the end of the week we will invite you to vote for your favorite. The winning NCP will be announced on Thursday, October 28th.
