Leaf Color Range

Another widely planted ornamental tree, it is valued for its attractive, starlike and highly fragrant flowers which bloom on shoots from the previous year. Visit the outdoor garden at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in late May to experience its highly fragrant blossoms. It can grow as a tree or can be trimmed as a shrub. It is also very tolerant of air pollution, so it does well in urban settings.

Height: 25’-30’ as a tree; 12’-20’ as a shrub.
Leaves: 3”-8” long, 1/2”-4” wide. Opposite or sub- opposite. Lustrous dark green above; paler beneath.
Habitat: From southern New Jersey to Florida and Texas. Native to North America.
