If you’ve
ever held a baseball bat, polo mallet, tennis racquet, or an
oar, you’ve probably handled a piece of ash lumber. This
tree is also popular as an ornamental and shade tree in the
East, and is grown throughout Pittsburgh.

| Height: 80’ with
a rounded crown of dense foliage. |
| Leaves: 8”-12” long,
pinnately compound, usually with 7 leaflets, each 2-1/2”-5” long
and 1-1/4”-2-1/2” wide. Dark green above, whitish
beneath, turning purple or yellow in autumn. |
| Habitat: In
valleys and on slopes with moist, well-drained, rich soil; often
in forests with other hardwoods. Can be found from
Minnesota, south to Florida and west into Texas. |
