Leaf Color Range

Wood from this tree is highly prized for furniture making. However, it is very expensive due to the scarcity of the trees. The edible walnuts which it produces are a delicious treat when they mature in the fall. Several species of the tree are grown just for commercial production of the nuts. It also features highly aromatic foliage.

Height: 70’-90’ with a rounded open crown.
Leaves: 12”-24” long, alternate pinnately compound with 9-21 leaflets, each 2-1/2”-5” long. Green to dark green above, fine hairs below, turning yellow in autumn.
Habitat: In well drained, moist soils, often along streams or in mixed forests from eastern South Dakota to New England and south to Florida.
