Using This Web Site

This Web site has been created to provide a simple, yet comprehensive study guide covering the many trees that can be found in the Pittsburgh area. Each descriptive page contains the following elements.

1. A title oval containing both the scientific name and the “common” name for each tree.
2. A color bar indicating the range of colors that the foliage takes on throughout the different seasons.
3. A full-color photograph of a leaf from the tree.
4. A brief description of the tree, its size, leaf configuration, habitat, etc. and, where possible, specific items of interest as they relate the tree to the Pittsburgh community.
5. An illustration of the tree structure to help with the identification during the late autumn and winter.
