Because
its fragrant flowers are produced over a long period of time
in late spring and early summer, the sweetbay has become popular
as an ornamental tree. It is unique because in the south, it
tends to be evergreen while in the north, it sheds its leaves
in autumn. It is often seen growing in association with sweetgum
and other wet soil trees.
