Leaf Color Range

A fast-growing tree that tolerates Pittsburgh’s difficult conditions from cold temperatures to city dirt. While it is a handsome and popular ornamental, it is also an excellent lumber source. The wood is used for furniture, flooring, fence posts, piling and even for pulpwood.

Height: 60’-90’ with stout, spreading branches forming a rounded crown.
Leaves: 4”-9”long, 3”-6” wide. Alternate, simple. Dull green above, paler below with some hairs.
Habitat: Often found in pure stands in a variety of soil conditions from moist and loamy areas to rock and clays. From Minnesota to North Carolina and in the mountains of Georgia.
