Leaf Color Range

Native to Europe as far north as Norway, this tree is popular as a shade tree in Pittsburgh. It has a rounded crown and thick foliage. It is particularly attractive in the spring when its greenish-yellow flowers bloom, and again in fall when its leaves turn a bright yellow. One variety, “Crimson King,” features red-purple leaves when in full bloom.

Height: 40’-50,’ occasionally over 90.’ Usual spread is 2/3 of or equal to height.
Leaves: Simple and opposite, 4”-7” across and high. Lustrous dark green above, lustrous beneath with hairs in axis of veins.
Habitat: Introduced about 1756. Because of its tolerance to city smoke and dust, this tree has been widely planted on roadsides and streets. This tree reproduces so well and thrives in the Pittsburgh area that it has begun to crowd out many of our native trees. This trait is called bio-invasive.
