Because
of its drooping branches, this tree is also called the “European
weeping birch.” While it is a graceful ornamental, it
is relatively short-lived. The commonly cultivated varieties
have very long branches and finely divided leaves.

an open, pyramid shaped or spreading crown. |
| Leaves: 1-1/4”-2-3/4” long,
1-1/2” wide. Alternate, simple. Dull green above, paler
beneath turning yellow in autumn. |
| Habitat: A
native of Europe and Asia Minor, this tree can be found almost
anywhere in the United States, in lawns, parks, and cemeteries.
This white-bark birch is susceptible to attack by several insects
in the Pittsburgh region. |
