Leaf Color Range

A haven for Pittsburgh’s birds and squirrels, this tree once dominated the forests of the northeast. It is one of the largest conifers in North America. In some isolated areas, pure stands of huge old trees can still be seen. As with other pines, the wood is used for construction lumber and pulpwood.

Height: 100’ or taller. Has a conical crown when young, becoming irregular with horizontal branches.
Needles: 3”-4” long in bundles of 5. Blue-green in color, soft and pliable.
Habitat: In well drained areas with sandy soils; from Manitoba east to Newfoundland and New England, and south to Georgia.
