Another
handsome ornamental (also called the “Judas tree”)
features a striking display of purple flowers covering the
length of the leafless twigs in spring. These flowers are edible
and can be eaten as a salad or fried.

| Height: 20’-30’ but
can grow to 45.’ The trunk is short and divides close to
the ground forming a spreading and rounded crown. |
| Leaves: 3”-5” long
and wide, often wider than long. Alternate, simple. Lustrous
dark green when mature, changing to yellow or yellow-green in
autumn. |
| Habitat: Native
to North America. In moist soils of valleys and slopes in hardwood
forests. Introduced in the early Colonial period.
From New Jersey to Florida, west to Missouri, Texas, and parts
of Mexico. |
