Often
called simply “cucumber tree” because its fruit
clusters look like cucumbers. It is a native of the eastern
United States. It features a straight trunk and a very narrow
crown when young to a rounded and broad crown of short, upright
to spreading branches at maturity. A magnificent example of
this magnolia can be seen in Allegheny Commons in front of
the community college.

| Leaves: Simple,
alternate. 5”-10” long, 3”-6” wide. Green
and becoming hairless above, paler and often with short hairs
beneath, turning yellow and brown in fall. |
| Habitat: In
moist soils of mountain slopes and valleys in mixed forests.
From Ontario and western New York; south to Florida; west
to Louisiana and north to Missouri. |
