This European
variety is a truly handsome shade tree and bares nuts which
are a favorite of wildlife, especially raccoons and squirrels.
This tree has many of the same characteristics as the American
Beech. The wood is also excellent for carving due to its longevity.

| Height: 40’-60’ with
a crown of long, spreading horizontal branches. |
| Leaves: 2”-4”long,
1”-3” wide. Alternate, simple. Glossy purple and
slightly hairy beneath, turning yellow and brown in autumn. |
| Habitat: In
rich, moist soils of uplands and well drained lowlands; often
in pure stands from southern Ontario, and into Florida, west
to Texas and north to Michigan. |
