Leaf Color Range

This European variety is a truly handsome shade tree and bares nuts which are a favorite of wildlife, especially raccoons and squirrels. This tree has many of the same characteristics as the American Beech. The wood is also excellent for carving due to its longevity.

Height: 40’-60’ with a crown of long, spreading horizontal branches.
Leaves: 2”-4”long, 1”-3” wide. Alternate, simple. Glossy purple and slightly hairy beneath, turning yellow and brown in autumn.
Habitat: In rich, moist soils of uplands and well drained lowlands; often in pure stands from southern Ontario, and into Florida, west to Texas and north to Michigan.
