Often,
this tree is found to contain large quantities of mites and
fungus that deform the branches into odd, bushy-looking growths
called “witch’s brooms.” It is an excellent
choice for parks and large area use because of its natural
ability to grow in dry soils and windy conditions.

spreading, drooping branches. |
| Leaves: 2”-5” long,
1-1/2”-2-1/2” wide. Alternate, simple. Smooth and
dull light or medium green above, paler beneath, turning yellow
in autumn. |
| Habitat: Can
be found generally in high pH soil, in river valleys and in mixed
forests. From North Dakota to New England, south to
Georgia and in Quebec and Manitoba. |
