Leaf Color Range

Often, this tree is found to contain large quantities of mites and fungus that deform the branches into odd, bushy-looking growths called “witch’s brooms.” It is an excellent choice for parks and large area use because of its natural ability to grow in dry soils and windy conditions.

Height: 50’-90’ with spreading, drooping branches.
Leaves: 2”-5” long, 1-1/2”-2-1/2” wide. Alternate, simple. Smooth and dull light or medium green above, paler beneath, turning yellow in autumn.
Habitat: Can be found generally in high pH soil, in river valleys and in mixed forests. From North Dakota to New England, south to Georgia and in Quebec and Manitoba.
