Leaf Color Range

Also known as the American planetree, this giant is the largest of North American hardwoods. Some early trees were large enough for settlers to stable livestock inside the tree! The wood is widely used for millwork, furniture parts, flooring and butcher blocks. It has a very large base, a massive straight trunk, and large spreading, often crooked branches forming a broad open crown.

Height: 60’-100’
Leaves: 4”-8” long and wide. Alternate, simple. Broad and oval with 3-5 shallow, broad, short-pointed lobes. Bright green above; paler beneath and becoming hairless except on veins, turning brown in autumn.
Habitat: In the wet soils of flood plains, stream banks and the edges of swamps or lakes. It is likely to be found along the banks of Pittsbugh’s rivers. In Maine, to the Florida Panhandle, west to central Texas, north to Nebraska and into northern Mexico.
