True to
its name, the sweet smelling resin produced by this tree has
actually been used in the production of chewing gum,
as well as in various kinds of medications. This tree can easily
be identified by its star- shaped leaves and golf ball sized
spiny fruit. The durable wood of the tree is also used in furniture
making. It is a large, straight, symmetrical tree with a conical
crown becoming rounded with age.

alternate. 6” long and wide. Shiny dark green above, paler
below, turning red in autumn. |
| Habitat: In
valleys, lower slopes and mixed woodlands with moist soils. Can
be found from Connecticut to New York, Florida, Ohio, Indiana,
Illinois, Missouri, Texas, Mexico, and into Guatemala. |
