Leaf Color Range

American colonists first recognized the beech because of its similarity to the European beech. It is a truly handsome shade tree and bears edible nuts which are a favorite of Pittsburgh’s wildlife, especially turkeys, squirrels and raccoons. The wood is also excellent for carving due to its longevity.

Height: 60’-80’ with a crown of long, spreading horizontal branches.
Leaves: 2-1/2”-5” long, 1”-3” wide. Alternate, simple. Glossy dark green above, light green and slightly hairy beneath, turning yellow and brown in autumn.
Habitat: In rich, moist soils of uplands and well drained lowlands; often in pure stands from southern Ontario, south to Florida, west to Texas.
