Sustainability
is a big word, but it is an important one. It means that the
things that we enjoy...should be available for the people
of the future. Just as the children in the picture in the front
of this book wanted to plant a tree for us to enjoy 100 years later,
we must plant trees for the people who will live here 100 years
from now. Alcoa is a large company that makes many things for people
to use. But one of the most important things that Alcoa can do
is to help make the world sustainable...so that you, your children
and your children's children can live in a world of beauty and
abundance with all the resources that are needed.
Trees are
the wonderful example of sustainability. They serve us today,
but
they will also serve the people of the future. They
are not our trees, but the trees of our grandchildren. Alcoa
has a program called One Million Trees that provides trees
for each
employee each year. The employees and their families are encouraged
to plant their trees in special places and to nurture them.
This program will result in a forest of 1,000,000 trees throughout
the
world that help bind our employees with their families and
with each other. As of December 2002 over 973,000 trees have
been planted.
12,100 of them have been planted in the Pittsburgh area.
We
hope this CD helps you know the trees of Pittsburgh better,
and by knowing about them, we believe that you will care
for them and respect the rights of
the children of the future to have a beautiful world to live in.
